Coming out of the supermarket yesterday, an older gentleman was selling paper Rose of Sharon flowers for Veteran's Day. I asked him how much? "We like to ask for a dollar," he said, with a weary sort of optimism. I had exactly two dollars to my name. I gave him both, and thanked him when he tried to thank me.
It's not about the flower. It's not even about giving their fund money. It's about letting them know they're not forgotten.

Moving in progress. Surrendered control of the process to my aunt, as work is kinda nuts right now. Renovations still not complete; won't have a kitchen for several days yet, apparently.
Movers were due to arrive at nine. So naturally, at eight-thirty, while I was still showering, the door buzzed, I couldn't go down, and the movers and the building superintendent got into a long drawn-out argument. And as is depressingly typical, both sides seemed more intent on winning the argument than solving the problem.
Gonna be a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong day.

This is either the saddest or the most hysterical thing I have seen in a long time:
Volvo, the car company, trying to appeal to the Twilight demographic. (You know... female and stupid.)
www.whatdrivesedward.com
This must mean that there is rampant Volvo product placement in New Moon.
Twilight, you exist to be mocked. Deal with it.

One of my performing groups has a major performance coming up (Nov 22! any of y'all that are in driving distance of Sacramento, and like eastern-european folk music, let me know and I can give information so you can come). Tonight, the second-to-last rehearsal, we were running the full concert, including song introductions.
One of the people steps forward. "The next three songs are about love." She paused, just long enough, before adding, "Twu wuv."
Someone else in the group murmured something about "bwings us togevah today."
I idly commented, "that dweam wiffin a dweam..."
We, er, had to get back on track after that. But it was a fun diversion.
(Every time someone asks me what I do, my answer varies, from describing volunteer stuff to explaining that I don't/can't have a job, but what I *hear* every time, in my head, is "unemployed!!?? in GREENLAND!!?!?!".)
Cross-posted between DW ( ) and LJ. Comments welcome in either place.

Huh. ABC has *two* new genre shows with a sprawling ensemble cast, a cool concept (even though one of them is recycled), and somewhat dodgy writing, not completely redeemed by the presence of a boatload of actors whose work I like -- well, I guess I shall keep on watching for now. At least ABC is trying on new things. Or trying to plug a hole soon to be left in Lost's wake, whatever.
The original was a big enough phenomenon that the show was imported to Korea. That was a freakin' big deal, back in the '80s. Well, the *other* major US telly available in Korea back then was Love Boat, so maybe the whole imported-to-Korea thing is not anything to brag about. (Another show I remember fairly well was this terribly soapy miniseries called Rich Man, Poor Man, with Peter Strauss and oh, God, young Nick Nolte, whom my 12-year-old self thought was the hottest thing under the sun. *facepalm*) Anyway, my teenaged self watched the entirety of the original (badly-dubbed) run of V religiously, and the alien baby-birthing scene scarred me for life. I'd forgotten most other details, except for Marc Singer looking constipated and whats-her-face's crazy 80's hair (I keep thinking it was Kirstie Alley for some reason.) Of course I was going to give the new version a try.
Thus far, it's a mixed bag. The pilot had a serious case of pilotitis, the pacing was all over the place, and it totally vomited the plot twists worth the entire season all over itself. There was still clunkiness in the second episode, but it kind of won me over when ( spoiler for the ep tonight )
So far, it's entertaining enough. I give it a provisional season pass.

You know, I keep meaning to be better at keeping up with this, but I never do. Either Things Happen, or I forget and then before you know it, months go by. I do keep up with the friends list, which ought to count for something, dammit.
In the grand scheme of things, though, there's not too much exciting going on asides from roleplaying fun and games and the prospect of a trip to see littlesilvered. Work is pretty much work and since it's about that time of year, it's getting crazier all the time.
I do have to say that the highlight of my week thus far is having one of the coffee shop workers say that he thought I was 19. I may feel old and decrepit but at least, I don't look it.
And now, it's time for more supper and tv-watching of some sort.

| Pre-Veteran's Day |
[10 Nov 2009|06:43pm] |
If I post at all about my activities tomorrow, it's going to be to talk fluff, because tomorrow is for running errands and cleaning up and cooking and freezing ahead for Christmas. Simple, normal, everyday, boring stuff.
But I get the day off to do it in in memory of those who have served in our armed forces, so before I go back to being busily self-centered, I want to thank those who've made it possible for me to be so.
To the veterans reading this, most especially my friends reading this.
To the man who leads the local clinic escorts.
To my father and grandfather and assorted male forbears back to the Revolution and probably before that.
It's a tough job and it takes tough people to do it.
Thank you.

ugh, had to write speech. hate writing speeches. this one, however, is short enough that strictly speaking (ha! pun) is more "remarks" than a speech. don't know why I agree to these things.

In case one or two of you were wondering, the varietal of choice while writing THE WEIGHT OF STONE seems to have been zinfandel, with occasional forays this summer into sauvignon blanc. That surprised me, as I thought it would be shiraz or tannat blend. Live and learn...
An Update to the December 5th Signing in Binghamton, NY:
Yes, you can order a signed copy of ANY BOOK OF MINE IN PRINT, even if you are not in the area.
As per the store manager: "If folks need it shipped to another Waldens, they just need to let me know which one (mall it is in, city, something. Store number if they are feeling super helpful and want to ask the folks at the store for me so I don't have to hunt it down). If they don't have a Waldens, I will ship it to them directly."
Remember, folk, the holidays are coming up! A signed, personalized hardcover makes a fabulous gift -- and so easy to gift-wrap! (and if you ask, we'll even wrap it for you! But be warned, pbray is picking the paper...)

The move is less than 24 hours away. The renovations in the new place are still not complete.
Painter: finished. Plumber: came by. Electrician: supposed to come tomorrow. Carpenter: don't ask.
So ... place won't have a kitchen yet, because the carpenter has been dragging his heels on the cabinets.
The movers show up at nine o'clock tomorrow morning.

| Bye Eastwick |
[10 Nov 2009|10:05am] |
|
So apparently ABC has opted not to pick up additional episodes of "Eastwick". Reports say they will show all 13 episodes, but they don't specify when. This is potentially good news for "Eureka". It's early enough they could work Tess back into the picture. I have the "Eastwick" episodes dvred, but I don't know when I'll get to them. I have seen one scene that pleases my old Nano no end, since Jaime gets to have a "Fabulous Baker Boys" moment -- piano, red dress, and a cute guy watching. Only way that gets better is if she tap dances...

I'll get her a comp anytime! Also, it amuses the snot out of me that she chooses the ridiculously fast and intricate "Shalott" for audience participation. (A fact I did not know before playing it a bazillion times until I figured out all the right places to breathe.)
